Step by Story—An Introduction

Hi!

Welcome to my blog. If you’re new here, well, that makes two of us!

My name is Kimberly, and I like to talk about stories and travel. It’s amazing how much the two go together. How many books and movies start with someone arriving in a new place that changes their life forever? Of course, sometimes that change ends up being a horror (a genre in which I do not indulge).

But one can’t deny that the places we’re from and the places we go help to shape who we are and how we see the world. The same is true of the places we reach whenever we read, listen to, or watch a good story.

I know my life was altered the first time I read A Wrinkle in Time* as a child. I was enthralled as I joined Meg, Calvin O’Keefe, and Charles Wallace on their far-flung journey across the universe, battling evil with light and following the guidance of Mrs. Who, Mrs. Whatsit, and Mrs. Which.

I still think of the planet Camazotz when I see an especially boxy and grey housing development or certain office spaces. And though I may not be able to reach the peaceful planet Uriel or the 2nd dimension, there are places I can reach.

You know, places on this planet. And I’m trying to reach every place on my list.

From Alaska to North Carolina, and from Ireland to Montenegro (so far), I hope you’ll join me as I explore the world and the stories that inspire us.

*Info about A Wrinkle in Time (some miner spoilers)

A Wrinkle in Time by Madeline L’Engle is a Newberry Award winning sci-fi/fantasy novel that follows the bright but uncertain Meg Murry and her genius younger brother Charles Wallace. The kids, along with their cool neighbor Calvin O’Keefe, are recruited to try to rescue their scientist father from the clutches of an evil force that tries to take away choice and individuality. Their father has been taken to a different planet due to his discovery of a tesseract, a way to actually bend or “wrinkle” space. Meg, Calvin, and Charles are aided by three women, Mrs. Who, Mrs. Whatsit, and Mrs. Which, mystical beings that have worked and sacrificed to battle the darkness that is striving to take over the universe. The children go to several planets, including:

  • A two-dimensional planet
  • Uriel, a peaceful and angelic planet
  • Camazots, a planet controlled by the evil entity where everyone is expected to look and act exactly the same, and anyone who doesn’t is punished

Consider giving it a read if you haven’t had the chance. Or even if it’s just been a minute. Until next time, safe trails and happy reading!
